Whether you’re a seasoned fighter getting ready for the next competition or just starting your MMA journey, it’s important to use the right sparring gloves to prevent injury to yourself and other training partners. This is especially true if you are using your gloves for live sparring, partner drills or bag work in the gym. Luckily, there are several different styles of MMA sparring gloves available to choose from, including those made by the leading brands.

Most MMA gloves are designed with open fingers and a free palm to allow you to grip your opponent’s arms during grappling or ground fighting techniques. The main difference between MMA gloves and boxing gloves is that MMA gloves have relatively thin padding over the knuckles, unlike boxing gloves which have full padding covering each finger and the thumb area.

In MMA, the standard competition glove for professional fights is usually 4 oz (113 g), with just the knuckle area fully padded. Sparring and training MMA gloves, on the other hand, are often nearly double in size and will pad the thumbs at least partially to provide much better protection.

Some people believe that their wrapped hands won’t fit into MMA gloves because the design is so small, but this is not necessarily true. Some MMA gloves are specifically designed for use with fabric hand wraps, which can be easily folded inside the glove and will offer a snug and secure fit. It’s a good idea to always use fabric hand wraps when practicing MMA, as they are not only essential for protection but also for keeping your knuckles in position for proper punching technique.
