If you’re upgrading to a new iPhone, it can be overwhelming at first. You’ll have to learn a new way to use your iPhone without the Home button and some other unfamiliar gestures.
One thing that is still very straightforward though is turning your iPhone 12 on and off with buttons. Fortunately, there are two different methods for this that work on all iPhone models.
1. Press and hold the Volume Up button and the Side button at the same time.
If you’re running iOS 11 or newer, you can turn on your iPhone 12 mini with a button press. This is great for when you’re out and about without a charger and need your phone to function.
If your iPhone 12 isn’t responding to any button presses or taps, it may be frozen. This can be a sign that the software is unstable or your device needs to be restarted.
It’s easy to reboot your iPhone 12 through a forced restart, but you’ll need to have your device connected to a power source before proceeding. Plug your charger into a power outlet and leave it connected for at least 10 minutes, then try doing a force restart. If the device starts to boot up, you’ll see a screen that says “Restarting Apple iPhone 12 / iPhone 12 mini”.
A hard reset is another way to get your iPhone to turn on again if it’s frozen or unresponsive. This method forces your iPhone to restart so it can fix any problems, such as a crashing app or an error message.
To do a hard reset on an older iPhone, press and hold the Home button and the Power button until the Apple logo appears. If your iPhone is newer, you can also do this with the Volume Up and Side buttons simultaneously.
You can use either of these methods to turn your iPhone off, but it’s important to note that this method will temporarily disable FaceID. When you want to use Face ID again, you’ll have to enter your passcode.
When you want to turn your iPhone off completely, it’s best to press and hold the Volume Up and Side buttons at the same time until the slide to power off slider appears. This will also prevent you from accidentally taking a screenshot instead of shutting down your iPhone.
2. Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Side button at the same time.
If you’ve got an iPhone 12 mini and it won’t turn on, there are a few things that can be done to try and get it back working again. One way is to force restart the phone by pressing and holding the Volume Down button and the Side button at the same time.
You’ll need to press and hold these buttons for a few seconds, until the Apple logo appears on your screen. Once the device reboots, you can use your iPhone to access the App Store and other functions that were disabled when it was in this mode.
While the process can take a while, it’s worth trying it out at least once before you give up on your device. The process isn’t perfect, and it can cause the software on your phone to malfunction, but it should work in most cases and won’t hurt your device in any way.
3. Press and hold the Side button.
When you’re ready to turn on your iPhone 12 mini, all you have to do is press and hold the Side button. This simple step is the same as it is for all other models of iPhone, and will usually power up your device in a jiffy.
If you’re struggling to power on your iPhone 12 mini, it could be because the Side button isn’t functioning properly. The Side button is used to control a variety of functions on your phone, including Siri and Assistive Touch. It’s also the key to activating Apple Pay and opening the camera app.
Thankfully, it’s easy to fix any issues you might be having with the Side button. In iOS 16 there’s even a way to disable the Side button’s default end call function, so you don’t have to worry about ending calls by accident.
The Side button has become a staple feature on iPhones, but it can be difficult to use if you’re not familiar with how to activate it. For example, it’s possible to accidentally activate the Emergency SOS feature if you don’t follow the instructions carefully.
One way to avoid this is to press and hold both the Volume Up and the Volume Down buttons at the same time. When you do this, your iPhone’s power menu will appear on the screen.
This menu will contain several different options. It will include a slider that turns off the iPhone, as well as one for Medical ID and an Emergency SOS.
4. Wait for the Apple logo to appear.
The iPhone is a mobile phone and not a tablet, so it’s no surprise you may have trouble navigating your shiny new ride. The best way to go about this endeavor is by following a few simple tips and tricks. You’ll be on the right track in no time, assuming of course you’ve chosen the appropriate port of call. Hopefully, you’ve also learned to leave the crown jewels at home or in your pocket for the better part of the day.
