Hillhaven opened in 1978 as an 18-bed nursing home in Hoquiem and is still owned by the Malin family today. The president and administrator are registered nurses, and the entire staff is dedicated to providing a warm and caring environment for all of their residents. The company believes in marking special occasions, celebrating worthy causes and supporting local police, firemen and veterans through their MONTESSORI MOMENTS IN TIME program.
Its innovative approach to the industry earned it the attention of readers’ magazines and led to a boom in business as Hillhaven expanded its operations nationwide. The first 10 nursing homes were U-shaped structures that emphasized privacy and avoided much of the institutional bleakness of older facilities, and they became known as the most advanced in the country.
In the early 1980s, nursing home expenditures reached $20.6 billion and Hillhaven was one of the key players in a growing market that would soon attract the attention of larger health care corporations.
