Cartagena Plaza isn’t the newest or nicest property in Bocagrande, but it’s well-positioned across from the city beach and offers a rooftop pool and fun activities center. It’s also a short walk from the upscale shops and restaurants in the historic center.

Despite its age and somewhat dated exterior, the 313-room property has been partially refurbished to appeal to millennial travelers. The lobbies and common areas have glitzy Hollywood-esque furniture and Xbox consoles, and Wi-Fi is free in public spaces. If possible, upgrade to the executive level, which gets you its own breakfast room and private concierge plus much nicer rooms.

The rooms have simple decor, with iHomes and flat-screen TVs, plus minibars (you’ll have to pay for items), and terrycloth robes. Some have a black leather love seat, and others have ocean views. Executive-level suites add multiple bedrooms and living spaces, plus a jacuzzi tub. Room service is available 24/7.

There are two on-site restaurants, Kasabe Fusion and Le Place. The former serves sushi and Asian fusion fare, while the latter has buffet dining with nightly themes like Italian or Mexican.

The hotel’s rooftop pool is a happening spot with a full schedule of activities led by staff members. It’s a great spot to learn how to bachata, or just take in the view of the gleaming skyline. It’s a little noisy for those looking to just read or nap, but it’s popular with families and young adults.

The hotel is a 15-minute drive from the walled city, where fascinating sites from the Sweets Gate to the Palace of the Inquisition await. La Boquilla beach is right across the street, and there are plenty of lively bars and clubs in the area. The hotel has a modern business center, and several meeting rooms. Airport shuttles and limo services are available. There’s also a rooftop terrace with seating and a bar. City Concierge Cartagena
