A TV mount will typically hold a lot of weight so it’s important to get it mounted correctly. Many people use wood screws but lag bolts are stronger and will make sure the mount stays in place.

The problem is that it’s not easy to know what size lag bolt to buy for the job. Using the wrong size may result in your mount not being secure enough and it could come off the wall and cause injury or damage to the screen or your furniture.

While there are mounts designed for mounting to drywall, most recommend installing into studs for a safer and more stable experience. Mounting to drywall can be problematic, especially old drywall that is crumbling or the studs are improperly spaced. While there are ways to fix this, it’s usually better to mount into studs and then add a wall plate over the holes.

If you’re mounting into metal studs it’s often best to pre-drill the hole with a smaller drill bit to create a guide for the larger drill. This will help prevent the metal studs from “walking” while drilling which can result in a less stable connection.

If you’re installing into a brick or concrete wall you will need a more powerful drill and the right tool for that type of material. These tools include a drill, concrete and masonry drill bits, a power screwdriver or impact driver and a socket wrench to tighten the bolts. Lag Bolts for TV mount
